Wax Carving Course (Lost-Wax Casting) (This course is currently not available)
What is Lost-Wax Casting?
The lost-wax process is simple in concept. First, an object is modeled in wax. Wax rods or wires called sprues are attached to the model, and the entire object and sprues are encased in a modified form of plaster called investment. The wax wires will later become the passageways through which metal enters the mold.
After the investment has solidified, the wax model, encased in plaster is placed near a fire or in an oven to melt the wax. When the wax has all melted or vaporized, a cavity remains that may be filled with metal. The fact that the wax has disappeared of course leads to the term lost-wax process.
To produce a metal replica of the wax model, silver, gold or some other metal is poured or forced into the sprue hole to fill the cavity left by the wax. When the metal has solidified, the mold is broken to remove the replica. After cleaning and polishing, one has a perfect metal copy of the wax model.
